Volunteer in the Park

Shepherd Parkway covers a vast-by-city-standards 197 acres. It has been neglected for decades, and there is much work to be done removing trash and invasive plants from the park.

Our volunteers enjoy exercise, time in nature, and knowing that every bit of effort makes the park a better place for plants, animals, and people.

The easiest way to get involved is to join one our Community Clean-ups on the second Saturday of every month.

Note: In 2017, our start time is moving up half an hour to 10:30 am.

Our upcoming dates are:

Saturday, September 9, 10:30 am to 1 pm
Saturday, October 14,10:30 am to 1 pm
Saturday, November 11,10:30 am to 1 pm
Saturday, December 9, 10:30 am to 1 pm

We meet in the picnic area in the park near the corner of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X Avenues SE.

Volunteers should wear boots, long pants, and clothes they don't mind getting dirty. Bring a water bottle.

Gloves, bags, tools and water refills are provided.

Reservations are not necessary unless you are bringing a group of more than ten.

We are also pleased to accommodate groups and individuals who would like to help at other times. The big jobs that need doing are:

  • Pulling trash and debris from the woods
  • Cutting invasive English Ivy off of trees
  • Pulling up invasive ground cover such as mustard grass and mile a minute vine(during spring and summer)
  • Knocking on doors in Congress Heights and Bellevue to get more neighbors involved
  • Doing outreach to schools, churches, professional organizations, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, and community associations

All volunteers receive orientation, training and equipment. Water and light refreshment are generally provided. Documentation of community service hours and letters of recommendation are available upon request.

To schedule a group or arrange individual volunteering, please contact Nathan Harrington at nbharrington at yahoo.com or 301-758-5892.
